Finding an Insurance Agent

Word of mouth is always helpful in identifying capable insurance agents. Ask for recommendations from people whose judgement you trust, such as your accountant, lawyer, family, or friends. Your local Yellow Pages will provide names of insurance agents in your area. Council does not provide a referral service.

You need to feel comfortable talking with your agent, however, the agent's insurance knowledge is of primary importance. If you have little knowledge about insurance, consider doing some research.

When interviewing a prospective agent, ask plenty of questions, including requesting information about the person's background. What is his or her experience in the type of insurance that you are looking into? How many insurance companies do they represent?

Insurance, regardless of whether you are buying or changing, is a big investment and can be complicated. An agent should be happy to take the time to explain everything in as much detail as you wish. Remember, you are the decision maker. Do not allow yourself to be pressured into something you are not comfortable with. Take the time you need to review the information you have been given.

Once you find an agent you are considering working with, you can ensure he or she is licensed by checking the name on this website, through our Agent/Agency Search.
